James Madison Park spreads 12.63 waterfront acres along Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. This is a city-owned slice of shoreline, and its openness and water-facing sweep are part of what people come to enjoy. Right here in the park you can see the Gates of Heaven Synagogue, Shaarei Shamayim, the 1863 building that survives as the eighth-oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States.
It has become a beloved and popular site for weddings of all faiths. In the 1970s the city purchased that 1863 building, restored it, and moved it here into the park so it could continue to be used and admired. Nearby is another civic presence: the Bernard - Hoover Boat House, also owned by the City of Madison and occupied by the Mendota Rowing Club.
