Reinforced concrete carries the 35-story tower you see at 400 West Market in Downtown Louisville. At 549 feet (167 m) it was Kentucky’s tallest building when it was built for $100 million in 1991, and it remains the tallest in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Look up and you’ll see the distinctive 80-foot (24 m) Romanesque dome, a nod to the tower’s original name, Capital Holding; that dome is lit from within at night, and the upper floors are illuminated as well.
The tower was designed by John Burgee with Philip Johnson; its groundbreaking came in July 1991, with initial occupancy in October 1992 and final occupancy in April 1993. Over the years its name changed with the companies that called it home: originally the Capital Holding Building and Capital Holding Center, later the Providian Center, then Aegon Center for the Dutch financial company Aegon. Aegon left the building in 2010, and the tower took on the address name 400 West Market in 2014.
