Look at the bronze portrait of Thomas A. Hendricks, who led the campaign to build this Statehouse in Indianapolis. This is a public artwork by Richard Henry Park honoring Thomas A. Hendricks (September 7, 1819 – November 25, 1885), who served as the 21st vice president of the United States with Grover Cleveland, had been a U.S. representative and U.S. senator from Indiana, and was the 16th governor who led the campaign to build this very Statehouse. The sculpture is a full-length bronze portrait of Hendricks in formal attire, a long dress overcoat draped over his figure, mounted on a pedestal of red Italian granite.
Park placed two bronze allegorical sculptures, one on each side of the pedestal, to represent “Justice” and “Enlightenment. The monument began as a single bronze statue surmounting a granite pedestal; as funds grew, Park was commissioned to add two seated allegorical bronzes and the granite pedestal was enlarged and modified to receive them. Notice that two bronze allegorical figures flank the pedestal, representing Justice and Enlightenment, added after Park's original single bronze statue outgrew its granite base.
