Picture a peaceful Sunday morning shattered without warning on this very harbor. On the morning of December 7, 1941, at 7:48 a.m., the first wave of 183 Japanese aircraft appeared over these waters and began a surprise attack that killed 2,403 Americans, wounded 1,178 more, and destroyed or damaged eighteen naval vessels and nearly 350 aircraft. President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed a shattered nation the following day, calling December 7 'a date which will live in infamy.' In those few hours, the United States was irrevocably drawn into the Second World War.
The attack came in two waves — torpedo planes swooping low over the harbor, high-level bombers releasing their payloads from above, dive bombers screaming down on airfields at Hickam, Wheeler, and Bellows. The men and women stationed here were caught almost entirely off guard on a peaceful Sunday morning. Many were at breakfast.
