Science and the performing arts share one roof at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. From here you can see a place devoted to science and the performing arts: the Center presents exhibits related to science and the performing arts and also offers a digital cinema. Its size is clear: in 1999 the education center encompassed a total of 130,000 square feet, including the three main components, plus STAGE TWO, Discovery Lab classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, the AMP Grand Lobby, and the Kunkel Gallery.
The story of how it came to be matters: established in September 1997 at the cost of a $52.7 million public-private partnership, the Whitaker Foundation and the Helen F. Whitaker Fund contributed over $8 million to its creation. In recognition of those gifts it is named in memory of Uncas A. Whitaker, founder of AMP Incorporated (now TE Connectivity), and his wife Helen F. Whitaker. The National Science Foundation awarded a grant in support of a permanent exhibit for the Science Center.
