Studio Park

Downtown · 2019 · Urban Redevelopment

What you'll hear here: about a minute on what happened at Studio Park and around Downtown — the audio starts on its own when you walk into range.

Just south of Van Andel Arena, Studio Park opened in 2019 as a mixed-use entertainment and residential complex on a formerly underused block. The development includes a cinema, restaurants, a hotel, apartments, and office space — a deliberate attempt to create the kind of round-the-clock density that makes urban neighborhoods feel alive at every hour. The cinema is the anchor: Grand Rapids had been without a downtown movie theater for years, and the return of first-run films to the urban core was treated as something of a civic milestone.

Studio Park represents a development philosophy that gained traction in mid-size American cities after 2010 — rather than building in the suburbs and hoping downtown follows, you concentrate investment in a walkable, mixed-use district and let momentum build outward. The apartments above the retail fill quickly, rents rise, and eventually the city faces the harder question: how to keep the benefits of revival from pushing out the people who stayed through the lean years. Grand Rapids is living that question right now.
