High above you on the Virginia Monument, Robert E. Lee rides his horse Traveller in bronze, a Battle of Gettysburg memorial honoring the commonwealth's Sons at Gettysburg. Up above, a bronze Robert E. Lee rides his horse Traveller, perched as an equestrian statue atop a granite pedestal. At the pedestal's base a sculpted bronze group of six standing figures represents the Artillery, Infantry, and Cavalry of the Confederate Army.
The whole composition rises to about 41 feet. This monument's granite pedestal was dedicated on June 30, 1913 for the 1913 Gettysburg reunion. On June 8, 1917, Virginia governor Henry C. Stuart presented the completed memorial to the public.
You are on West Confederate Avenue, on the southwest side of Gettysburg National Park, standing where the figures deliberately face the Field of Pickett's Charge and the equestrian statue of Union General George G.
