Granite and bronze rise at the corner of Broadway and Rosenberg Avenue, where the Texas Heroes Monument towers over the intersection. This memorial was commissioned by Henry Rosenberg to commemorate the brave people who fought during the Texas Revolution. The sculptor was Louis Amateis, who, while a professor in Rome, submitted his statue groups, bas reliefs, and bronze works to the College of Sculptors at Rome for approval.
The monument was built by New England Granite Works from Concord, New Hampshire, granite and bronze, and the work was shipped before June 4, 1899. Rosenberg, a well-known banker, bequeathed nearly a quarter of a million dollars to public enterprises and specifically set aside $50,000 for this erection; he also spent much of his money on the Galveston Orphans Home and the Rosenberg Library, and the town of Rosenberg, Texas, bears his name. The finished memorial was unveiled on April 22, 1900.
