Frederick's Evangelical Lutheran Church rises in front of you. This congregation, which began meeting in 1733, became the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick in 1752 and is the oldest Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Maryland and one of the oldest in the United States. Its first minister was Rev. Bernard Michael Houseal, who served from 1752 to 1759.
The building of the church was slowed by the outbreak of the French and Indian War, but construction was completed before that conflict ended, in 1762. Founded by German immigrants, services here were entirely in German until 1810; that year English was introduced and both German and English sermons were offered until 1816. After 1816 all sermons were delivered in English.
