Locals call it the Stanton Street Bridge, but the span ahead of you is officially the Good Neighbor International Bridge. This is the international bridge that links the United States city of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, carrying you across the Rio Grande (Río Bravo). Completed in 1967, the span stretches 880 feet (270 m). Locals use many names for it: in Mexico Puente Internacional Lerdo (Centro) — 'Lerdo International Bridge, Center' — and it is also called Puente de la Amistad ('Friendship Bridge'), Puente Río Bravo ('Rio Bravo Bridge'), and Puente Ciudad Juárez–Stanton El Paso ('Ciudad Juárez–Stanton El Paso Bridge').
Beneath your feet the five-lane deck manages steady, purposeful traffic: three lanes head southbound, while one northbound lane serves Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection, SENTRI, users. A designated commuter lane was co-leased and operated by the United States General Services Administration and the El Paso Chamber from January 26, 1999 through at least August 24, 2022, a reminder of the bridge’s role in daily cross-border life.
