Fourth Street and Court Avenue meet at the corner where you are, under the Randolph Hotel, a landmark hotel of downtown Des Moines. The building was designed and built by H.L. Stevens & Company in 1911, and sources describe it as a nine-story hotel while also calling it an eight-story hotel constructed in 1912 as the first tall and only 'absolutely fireproof hotel' in the city. It rents rooms for a weekly rate, and most guests are considered long term, staying more than thirty consecutive days.
The address—200–204 4th Street—places it squarely in the downtown commercial district along the historic Court Avenue strip. You may notice the layers of history: a rehabilitation planned in 2008 to convert the property into low- and moderate-income rental housing using federal and state historic preservation tax credits, its listing on the National Register of Historic Places on June 11, 2009, and its announcement as the featured listing on the National Park Service weekly list on June 19, 2009. Ironically, there was a fire reported here on February 19, 2010.
