Edward Titche and Max Goettinger gave their name to the Titche–Goettinger Building, whose broad department store façade runs along St. Paul Street between Main and Elm ahead of you. From this corner you can read a retail history: Edward Titche and Max Goettinger formed their partnership in 1902 and opened a store on the southeast corner of Elm and Murphy. By 1904 they had already outgrown that location and moved into the year-old Wilson Building.
Growth continued: by 1928 construction began on a new flagship two blocks east in what was called "Uptown. Designed by architect George Dahl, the new building opened in November 1929 as one of the largest department stores in the Southwest. Today the building houses apartments, retail space, and the Universities Center at Dallas, and its importance is recognized — it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places both on its own and as part of the Dallas Downtown Historic District, and it is a Dallas Landmark within the Harwood Street Historic District.
