Notice The Horseshoe at the heart of this Columbia campus, where Hootie & the Blowfish once filmed MTV Unplugged. On June 5, 1970 it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as District #70000596, bounded by Pendleton, Sumter, Pickens, and Green(e) Streets. This is a place of education and public life: its historic and current functions are listed as Education, Recreation And Culture, with sub-functions as College and monument/marker — think of the Maxcy Monument that marks memory here.
The district’s architecture is described as Early Republic, with Robert Mills among the architects and builders, and periods of significance spanning 1800–1824, 1825–1849, and 1850–1874. The State of South Carolina is the owner. You may remember, or notice on older videos, that on April 19, 1996 MTV Unplugged filmed Hootie & the Blowfish’s concert on The Horseshoe before the release of their second album, Fairweather Johnson.
Among notable former residents is James McBride Dabbs. The Maxcy Monument marks memory on The Horseshoe, and the district's Early Republic buildings sit inside Pendleton, Sumter, Pickens, and Green(e) Streets.
