Art Deco lines from 1937 still shape the Visulite Theatre ahead of you, a movie house that has become one of Charlotte's most beloved live music venues. The building was constructed at the height of the golden age of neighborhood cinema, when going to the movies was a weekly ritual for American families and every neighborhood needed its own theater. The Visulite served the Elizabeth and Plaza Midwood neighborhoods for decades as a movie house before the multiplex era made single-screen neighborhood theaters economically unviable.
After years of uncertainty, the building was converted into a live music venue, and the Visulite has operated as such since 1999. The interior retains much of its original charm — the curved ceiling, the stage where the screen once hung, the balcony that overlooks the main floor. The venue books a mix of touring artists and local acts, with a calendar that reflects Charlotte's eclectic musical tastes: indie rock, soul, country, electronic, and everything in between.
