Senator Justin Smith Morrill gives his name to Morrill Hall, anchoring the southeast corner of the University Green at Main Street and University Place. It bears the name of U.S. Senator Justin Smith Morrill, author of the Morrill Land-Grant Acts of 1862 and 1890, and a UVM trustee from 1865 until 1898. The hall rose here in 1906–07 to house the UVM Agriculture Department and the Agricultural Experiment Station, built after a state appropriation of $60,000 secured by bill H.76: passed in the Vermont House on October 27, 1904 (170 Yeas, 54 Nays), in the Senate on November 11, 1904 (23 Yeas, 2 Nays), and signed by the Governor on November 15, 1904.
In recognition of its place on campus, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the University Green Historic District on April 14, 1975. As of 2015 Morrill Hall continues to house the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the UVM Agricultural Extension Service. A state appropriation of $60,000 raised it in 1906, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences still keeps its home here, where Main Street meets University Place.
