Paths radiate from a central fountain in the grassy quarter of City Hall Park, at the southern end of your Church Street walk. This small, grassy quarter of the city occupies most of a city block and has long been one of the central economic, civic, and public spaces of Burlington. Paths radiate from a central fountain; around you are grassy areas dotted with trees, the simple geometry of the park giving a calm center to the surrounding streets.
To your east a row of three buildings formally faces Church Street, yet they turn proper facades to the park itself. The southernmost of those is Burlington City Hall: a large neo-Classical and Georgian Revival building constructed in 1928 to a design by W.M. Kendall of McKim, Mead, and White. The architecture you see here traces the city’s growth from a frontier town to an urban commercial center, a story the district was recognized for when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Framing City Hall Park, Main Street, St. Paul Street, and College Street carry the commercial buildings you can still trace, all built by 1928.
