Look toward the Buffalo River, where the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park keeps watch in Buffalo, New York. This park — formerly known as The Buffalo Naval and Servicemen's Park — is home to several decommissioned U.S. Naval vessels. Ahead of you are the Cleveland-class cruiser USS Little Rock and the Fletcher-class destroyer USS The Sullivans, both part of the original display when construction began in 1977 and the park opened to the public on July 4, 1979.
Nearby is the Gato-class submarine USS Croaker, added in 1988 and refitted in 1989. All three ships are open for public tours, and importantly they remain property of the United States Navy, which still inspects them annually. The park itself grew from a 1976 request by the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency and the Buffalo Naval and Servicemen's Park for a decommissioned naval vessel, and has gone through a few major changes in recent years.
