Tourtellotte & Co. designed the John Haines House in 1904 for a real estate developer who would go on to be mayor of Boise City and Governor of Idaho. Designed by Tourtellotte & Co. and constructed in 1904, this is the house of John M. Haines, a real estate developer and Republican who served as mayor of Boise City from 1907 to 1909 and as Governor of Idaho from 1913 to 1915. Look at the first story: a veneer of rectangular cut stone gives the base weight and texture.
Above, the second story wears shingled, flared walls that catch light and shadow. Notice the turrets that accent the front two corners, lending a vertical flourish typical of Queen Anne design. Ahead, a classical porch with Doric columns and a flattened pediment separates the offset main entrance from the street, a composed transition from street to house.
The house was recognized as part of the Fort Street Historic District on November 12, 1982, and it was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 17, 1982. From the cut stone base to the flared shingles and the twin turrets, this Queen Anne earned its own National Register listing on November 17, 1982.
