- Pack Square Park
Blue Ridge peaks hem Asheville in, and nineteen stops walk the Arts & Crafts city that rose between them. Pack Square Park holds the Asheville Art Museum, the Black Mountain College Museum, and Pack Memorial Library at 67 Haywood Street. The route climbs through the Downtown Historic District past the Young Men's Institute Building, the Grove Arcade's never-finished skyscraper base, the Spanish Renaissance dome of the Basilica of St. Lawrence, Douglas Ellington's Art Deco City Hall, the Buncombe County Courthouse, and the blade-thin Flat Iron Building at Battery Park and Wall Street. The Jackson Building, Asheville's first skyscraper, climbs 140 feet above Pack Square. Thomas Wolfe's boarding-house childhood home at 52 North Market Street anchors the literary side. Up on Sunset Mountain, Overlook Castle and the Omni Grove Park Inn's long stone facade close the walk, with the Smith-McDowell House and UNC Asheville reaching south.

Smith and the Catholic community, this parish was later elevated by Pope John Paul II to the rank of minor basilica in 1993.
