Ogle Hall sits at 247 King George Street, listed in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties as Inventory AA-530 and known today as the United States Naval Academy Alumni House. The brick you see was raised between 1739 and 1742 for Dr. William Stephenson, and the building took its enduring name in 1747 when Daniel Cheston leased it to Provincial Governor Samuel Ogle. Ogle kept two properties in the Province — this one and the Belair Mansion in nearby Collington, Maryland — and that connection shaped the house’s story.
Inside these walls another chapter was written when Benjamin Ogle Tayloe was born here on May 21, 1796 to Anne Ogle Tayloe, daughter of Benjamin Ogle and wife of John Tayloe III of The Octagon House in the Federal City of Washington. The Tayloe family’s seat on the Northern Neck of Virginia, the colonial estate Mount Airy built by John Tayloe II in Richmond County, threads farther into that family history. Recently the house changed hands and in 2021 Ogle Hall was sold for future use as a boutique hotel.
