Look northeast of Central and Broadway, where five Gothic Revival buildings of the old Albuquerque High School campus in Huning Highlands gather around a courtyard. Here, on the northeast corner of Central and Broadway NE at the center of an area now called East Downtown or EDo, five buildings gather around a central courtyard. All of them wear the Gothic Revival styling typical of early 20th-century school architecture.
The original building, Old Main, sits on the southeast corner of the campus facing Central Avenue. Built in 1914 and designed by Henry C. Trost, this three-story block originally housed classrooms, a gymnasium, a library, an auditorium, and a science laboratory. The high school moved to a new location in 1974, and the old buildings stood vacant for decades before being renovated as loft apartments in the early 21st century.
The site was added to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties in 1977 and is protected by the city as a historic landmark. Your eye can still trace those layered histories — schoolroom, abandonment, renewal — carved into the five gathered buildings and their green central courtyard.
