Explora, the science center just near Old Town Albuquerque, takes its name from a Spanish command: explore. Its name is the imperative form of the Spanish verb explorar — it literally tells you to explore. Inside, the museum uses a hands-on, inquiry-based learning approach to science, math and art, and that approach shapes everything you see.
The building offers 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) of exhibit space on two floors, with over 250 interactive exhibits spanning science, technology and art. You can encounter a laminar flow fountain, try experiments at the experiment bar, make things in the arts and crafts area, or marvel as someone rides the high-wire bike. Beyond exhibits, this is also a home for a performance theater, a gift store, educational program areas, the in-house exhibit workshop and staff offices.
Explora is a member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers; it even hosted the ASTC 2013 Conference in Albuquerque alongside the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. The museum’s mission — "Creating opportunities for inspirational discovery and the joy of lifelong learning through interactive experiences in science, technology and art. — hangs in the air in every gallery.
