Thirty-one stops concentrate New York's capital into a mile of Albany sidewalk. The Dutch founded Fort Orange here in 1624 as New Netherland's first permanent trading post, and the First Church in Albany grew out of the 1642 congregation that followed. From Rockefeller's Empire State Plaza, the State Capitol, The Egg, and the Erastus Corning Tower, the walk climbs State Street Hill to the old Fort Frederick ground, then descends through Capitol Hill, Center Square, and the Washington Park Historic District. Along the way: Schuyler Mansion where Philip Schuyler built his Georgian estate; the Albany Academy building where Joseph Henry co-discovered inductance; the New York State Executive Mansion, Government House, Albany City Hall, and the Albany Institute of History & Art. The route closes along Broadway at the Pump Station, the Hudson River Way, and the USS Slater afloat on the Hudson.
